How to get your site up and running.

This guide might be for you, or someone you know.

Things you will need (and how to get them):

1) A domain name
2) Some web space
3) Ability to update your site

1) Get a domain

Here at FreeDNS, the Shared Domain Registry lets you find shared domains you can attach to for free. Be warned they may only work as long as the owner allows you to use it. In some cases, this might be forever. If you are going to take this route, realize domains are independently owned, and you may wish to contact the owner yourself. You will ultimately be under their grace.

If you want a rock solid foundation for your site, then it is recommended that you acquire a domain of your own. This will ensure you have complete long-term control over it. You can then choose to share it with the other members here, if you so choose (and they will instead be at your mercy). Acquiring your own domain will ensure you are not locked into any single service, either.

2) Some "web space"

This is a location that you put your site at, which never sleeps, whether you are connected to the Internet or not.

I have tried a few different places and my favorite has been Hostmonster. They allow virtually unlimited everything for $6.95/mo, and the setup time is instant.

3) Transferring your site to your webspace

FlashFXP is an actively maintained application which will allow you to move data securely to Hostmonster's servers (using Auth TLS is recommended). This gives you a easy and secure method of exchanging files between your PC and Hostmonster's servers via a convenient (and encrypted) link.

Tip

* Domains can expire. You must pay attention to not let them expire !!! This commonly overlooked little detail can cost big down the road. You can often enable auto-renew, but credit cards also expire.

* If you are hiring someone to make you a site, make sure that you get the domain in your own name. Long term control will be with whoever's name the domain was purchased under. Getting it in your name will protect you from falling victim to any extortion scheme.
